The socionics information elements
One room. Eight different things to notice, all of them true at once.
There is the warmth of the stove. Who is actually running the evening. The mood at the table, and the loyalties under it. The logic of the recipe, the budget it ran on, what the night could still turn into, and where it drifts if nobody steers.
They come in four families, and each family faces two ways.
Intuition, sensing, logic and ethics — four families. Each splits in two: an extraverted element aimed at objects and events out in the world, and an introverted one aimed at the relations and impressions between them. Four twos make eight. Written out, Ne is extraverted intuition — often spelled extroverted intuition — and Ni is introverted intuition.
Same family, opposite direction — and they barely feel related.
Both halves of a family handle the same raw material. The extraverted one goes at the thing itself. The introverted one reads what the thing does to the room, and to you. Sensing is the easiest place to feel the difference.
Se · volitional sensing
Force and presence. Who holds the room, what can be pushed and how hard, whose territory this is. It acts on the situation.
Si · experiential sensing
Comfort and condition. Temperature, taste, fatigue, whether anyone has been standing too long. It tunes the situation.
No element is a virtue, and none is a flaw.
Everyone runs all eight of them. There is no element you would rather have been dealt, and none that makes a person better at living. Socionics says only that the eight are not equally cheap for you to run.
All eight, in plain terms.
The classical names are the ones the literature uses, and this site’s marking scheme uses them too. If you arrived from MBTI, these eight are what its writers call cognitive functions. Socionics places the same eight differently. Strong and weak below are shorthand for how cheaply a person runs that channel. Where that comes from is the next page.
Ne intuition of possibilities
The unused room, the underused talent, the third option nobody proposed.
strongTurns out alternatives faster than anyone can use them.
weakOpen-ended brainstorming reads as noise. It wants the realistic path named.
Ni temporal intuition
Where a project or a friendship is heading, what stage it is in, when to move.
strongAt home among images of the past and the future.
weak“Where do you see yourself in five years” is almost physically uncomfortable.
Se volitional sensing
Who holds the room, what can be pushed and how hard, whose territory this is.
strongTreats confrontation as an ordinary tool.
weakYields under direct pressure, then carries the encounter for days.
Si experiential sensing
Comfort, taste, temperature, fatigue — the felt quality of right now.
strongMakes a space pleasant without visible effort.
weakOverrides hunger and tiredness for days, until the body forces the issue.
Te pragmatic logic
What works, what it costs, and whether a better method already exists.
strongSpots the wasteful step in a process it has never seen before.
weak“Justify it with numbers” arrives in a foreign language.
Ti structural logic
Whether the parts fit — definitions, categories, the contradiction nobody named.
strongFinds a clean scheme restful, and sees the crack immediately.
weakResents being graded against formal rules that refuse to bend.
Fe ethics of emotions
The shared emotional temperature of a group, and which way it is moving.
strongLifts a flat table or cools a hot one, strangers included.
weak“Show enthusiasm on cue” lands as a demand to perform.
Fi ethics of relations
Closeness and distance — who is loyal to whom, and what a bond can bear.
strongAlways knows where it stands with people.
weakBlindsided to learn an acquaintance felt wronged weeks ago.
An element is not a personality. Where it sits is.
Deal the eight into eight seats, one each, and you have a type. Which one leads, which one gets asked for, which one is sore — that is part 3.
These eight are the vocabulary for everything else on this site.
