Terms of use

1 · Who this is for

These terms cover the crosstype app — the one with an account, public rooms and direct messages — and crosstype pro, its subscription. They do not govern this website, where the test needs no account, asks for no agreement, and scores in your browser.

Accounts are for adults: 18 and over, everywhere, with no exceptions. You confirm that you are 18 or older when you set up your profile after you first sign in, with the 18+ tick or, where Apple requires an age check, through Apple’s age range, and the database refuses a profile without that confirmation. It checks that confirmation again, on both sides, whenever a direct-message thread is started and whenever one member looks up another’s profile. Beyond that confirmation, the app does not verify your age. Taking the test on this website needs no account and asks your age not at all.

2 · The rule that comes first

There is zero tolerance for objectionable content and for abusive behaviour. An account that posts it can have the content removed and the account removed with it. That does not require a pattern, a warning, or a second offence.

3 · What is not allowed

These are the same categories the app’s own report button offers, because a rule nobody can report against is decoration:

• Harassment or bullying — including following someone between rooms to continue it.
• Hate speech — abuse aimed at who someone is.
• Sexual content. Sexual content involving minors is prohibited absolutely: it is removed, the account goes, and it is reported where the law requires.
• Spam or advertising, including bulk direct messages.
• Self-harm — which is on the sheet for a different reason, below.
• Something else — last on the sheet on purpose, so nothing that belongs in the queue arrives without a name for it.

The self-harm option sits on a different footing from the rest. It is not there to get someone punished. It is there so a person looks.

One more, particular to what this app is about: a type is not an insult and not a credential. Using someone’s type to tell them what they are incapable of is harassment with a diagram attached, and it is treated as harassment.

4 · Reporting and blocking

You can report a message, or a profile’s username, display name and bio, from inside the app, choosing one of the six reasons above and adding up to 1,000 characters of description if you want to. You do not have to explain yourself to report something. To be rid of someone, block them.

Blocking someone hides each of you from the other, in the database, in both directions: your messages in public rooms are withheld from them by the server and theirs from you, your profiles are hidden from each other, and in direct messages the thread stops existing for both of you and no message can cross in either direction. Messages already on your screen when you block disappear at once.

Blocking also ends the friendship — the app does both in one move, on purpose, so that unblocking someone later does not quietly hand back a connection you had already ended.

5 · How moderation actually works

One person reads every report. There are no in-app moderators and nobody in a room can be promoted into one — the operator is the only account that can act, and that is a property of the database, not a policy we are asking you to trust.

The word filter holds what it catches. A message containing a word on the filter’s list is held: nobody else in the app sees it until the operator has reviewed it. Then it is shown — unless an edit is caught again — or kept hidden from everyone but you for good. The app does not mark a held message. The 24 hours below is for reports.

Reports are acted on within 24 hours, weekends included. Acted on means read and decided: what breaks these terms is taken down, and the account that posted it can be removed. An alert fires while anything is waiting in the queue, so this is a promise you could catch us breaking.

Four things can happen to what breaks these terms: a message can be taken down, a message the word filter caught can be kept hidden from everyone but its author, a profile’s display name or bio can be cleared, and an account can be removed. There is no suspension — it has not been built, and naming a penalty that does not exist would be the same sort of overclaiming this site is supposed to be against.

6 · Ending it

You can delete your account at any time, from inside the app, without asking anyone. It is immediate and it cannot be undone — /delete-account sets out exactly what goes and what stays.

We can remove an account that breaches these terms. Removal is the same deletion, with the same consequences, including that reports already filed about that account survive it.

7 · crosstype pro

crosstype pro is an optional subscription, bought inside the app through Apple or Google Play. What it includes is listed on the plan page in the app, at the price the store shows there. The 18+ rule in §1 applies to it as to the account.

It renews until you cancel it. Cancel in your iPhone’s Settings, under your Apple ID’s subscriptions, or, on Android, in Google Play, under your subscriptions; pro stays on until the end of the period you have paid for. Deleting your crosstype account does not cancel it. If a renewal payment fails, crosstype pro stays on for up to 16 days while the store tries the payment again, and ends if it still hasn’t gone through.

A subscription belongs to the first crosstype account signed in with the Apple ID or the Google account that bought it. Restore, on the plan page, moves it to the account you are signed in with — on an iPhone for an Apple purchase, on Android for a Google Play one. It is not shared through Apple’s Family Sharing or Google Play’s family library.

Refunds are the store’s. Ask Apple through its own report-a-problem page, or Google Play through its own refund request; we cannot issue one. A refund ends pro for the period refunded.

Founding is a year of pro at a founding price for the first thousand founding members, paid once, and it does not renew: after the year, pro continues only as an ordinary subscription at the plan’s price. Founding numbers stop at 1,000. If your payment arrives after the last one is taken, you still get the founding year, without a number. A number is shown on its member’s profile to anyone who can see it, and it grants nothing. Restore moves it with the purchase. A founding number belongs to the purchase that earned it, not to the account. If you delete your account, the number stays with that purchase, and it comes back if the subscription is attached to another crosstype account. Only a refund retires it, and a retired number is never given to anyone else.

The app itself is licensed to you under Apple’s standard licence agreement for apps; these terms sit beside it.

8 · The pair report

The pair report is a written reading of you and one friend, from your own test result. It is asked for from inside the app, about a typed friend, and bought there through Apple or Google Play. One purchase pays for one report and does not renew. If a report is cancelled before it is written, the credit it spent comes back and can pay for another; a refund sends the money back instead. It is written by AI.

A live paid year of crosstype pro, yearly or founding, includes two pair reports. Holding a yearly year and a founding year at once gives two included reports between them, not two each.

Refunds are the store’s, as for crosstype pro: ask Apple or Google Play, through their own pages; we cannot issue one. If what funded the report is refunded before the report is written, the report is cancelled; a report already written stays.

A block between you and the friend cancels a report that has not been written yet and returns the buyer’s credit, bought or included. A report already written stays, and is hidden from its buyer while the block stands.

Unfriending before the report is written cancels it too, when the writer next runs, and returns the credit. A report already written stays, and its buyer can still open it after the unfriend.

Deleting either account deletes the report. The record of what funded it stays, detached, and a credit that was already spent is not returned. A bought credit that was never spent is lost with the account; an included report that was never used stays with its paid year of crosstype pro.

9 · What crosstype is not

A socionics type is a hypothesis, not a diagnosis. Nothing here is psychological or medical assessment, none of it is advice, and no result should be used to decide anything that matters about another person. Socionics is a contested framework rather than settled science; the marking scheme is published at /method precisely so that you can go and argue with it.

10 · Which law applies

These terms are governed by the law of the State of New York, and by the federal law of the United States where that applies. That is where crosstype is run from, and naming it is the whole of the clause: there is no arbitration agreement here, no class-action waiver, and no term telling you which courthouse you have to use.

If the consumer law of the country you live in gives you rights this page cannot take away — and in much of Europe and the UK it does — then it gives you them, and the line above does not change that.

The date at the top of this page is when its wording last changed. Write to support@crosstype.app — for a report that needs a human, for anything on this page you think is wrong, or to tell us the moderation cadence above was not met, which is the sort of thing we would rather hear than not.
