ESTp and ISTj run the same two functions in the opposite order. Mirror relations mean shared subject matter and reversed seriousness: ISTj and ESTp keep editing each other's emphasis, and the work usually improves. The compatibility is collegial — high on understanding, low on rest.

§2 In practice
Where it clicks
- A renovation shows the machine at its best. The ISTj drafts the sequence from base Ti. The ESTp, working from base Se, clears the permit office, the contractor, and the load-bearing wall. Nothing gets discussed twice.
- They hand each other criticism with no packaging on it. You measured wrong, this is late, that price is theft — each takes the sentence as data, fixes the problem, and moves on. Neither has ever asked the other to say it nicer.
- The ESTp's demonstrative Te turns up the prices and precedents before anyone asks. The ISTj's demonstrative Si keeps the tools oiled and the household running underneath it all. Each treats the other's background work as simply how things are.
- Jurisdiction was settled once, early on: who owns the car, the money, the tools. The treaty holds for years because both of them believe in treaties, and beta hierarchy suits them. Every domain has a ruler, and everyone knows who it is.
- Whatever the ESTp improvises, the ISTj writes into law. The shortcut found under deadline pressure becomes next month's standard procedure, written up and enforced. The ESTp gets the win, the ISTj gets the order, and both call that the natural division of labor.
Where it grinds
- The ISTj's verdicts on propriety hit a genuine blind spot. A decent person wouldn't have said that, delivered from role Fi, lands squarely on the ESTp's vulnerable Fi. The ESTp can't reconstruct what the offense even was, and concludes the rule is arbitrary.
- To the ISTj, the ESTp's what-if openings look like sabotage. A casual role-Ne suggestion — scrap the plan, try something else — strikes the ISTj's vulnerable Ne as a threat to the scheme itself. The ISTj answers by closing options, and the ESTp starts to feel the walls.
- Their two command registers collide in a hardware store aisle. The ISTj expects compliance through the rule, the ESTp through the push, and neither register recognizes the other as authority. The argument about anchor bolts is really an argument about who yields.
- The house runs efficiently and silently. Privately, both want some cheering on and a sense of where all this is going, since Fe and Ni are things each receives rather than makes. But both file the wanting under weakness, so nobody ever applies.
- The ESTp breaks any rule that doesn't serve the moment, treating the ISTj's Ti as a toolkit. The ISTj regulates any force that exceeds the scheme, treating the ESTp's Se as a resource to be permitted. Each notices the demotion. Each logs it.
