An ISTj keeps a working order of things and checks it all the time. What the rule is, whose job this was, what got agreed in writing — these are live questions. A system that contradicts itself is uncomfortable to live in. They hold themselves to the standard first. That's what makes them hard to argue with.
An ISTj works out the correct scheme and then brings reality into line with it, step by step. Their weak spot is open-endedness (vulnerable Ne): talk where anything is possible reads as noise, or as a threat. They warm up when others carry the emotional current (suggestive Fe) and value a quiet sense of where events are heading (mobilizing Ni).

§2 How it actually goes
Strong or weak is how much capacity the seat has; valued or unvalued is whether an ISTj wants to spend time there.
The force is used on purpose, and it serves the order. An ISTj will hold a line and chase the person who missed the deadline. They'll say the unpopular sentence out loud when the meeting has spent forty minutes avoiding it. They don't really enjoy conflict. It's just part of doing the job right.
For a while an ISTj will hold the personal tone — the sympathy, the admission that this is hard. It's sincere. It's also work. The relief when the conversation turns practical is real too. Warmth is a duty they take seriously and can't keep up forever.
Open-ended possibility is where an ISTj suffers. A plan with four open branches and no agreed way to choose looks like chaos, not opportunity. Being told to keep the options open feels like being told to stand in a doorway forever. They'll settle a question early. Just to have it settled.
An ISTj needs the warmth brought to them. Once it is, they're much easier company. Someone who jokes with them, includes them, and won't be scared off by the stern exterior gets a version their coworkers never meet. Without that, they get drier and more correct. They come across colder than they are.
Talk about where all this leads gets an ISTj's attention. They won't bring it up themselves. A well-argued case about the next ten years can change their course. They're grateful to whoever makes it. Their own instinct is to lock down the ground they're standing on. The far end they leave to someone else.
An ISTj can do it the efficient way just fine. They won't do it at the cost of doing it right. They know the shortcut exists. The shortcut sets a precedent, and the precedent is what they're really managing. Shown numbers that say cut the corner, they'll accept the numbers and keep the corner.
An ISTj runs a more comfortable, better-ordered life than they ever let on. The gear is looked after. The routine holds, and the equipment gets serviced before it breaks. None of it comes up in conversation. It mostly shows as competence in an emergency, when it turns out they had the right thing in the car.

What comes easily
- Names the rule that covers a situation, and the one it contradicts, before the second slide (Ti).
- Rewrites a tangled approval chain as six numbered steps, and the step nobody had ever owned becomes impossible to skip (Ti).
- Takes a stalled room in hand inside four minutes and puts a name against every task (Se).
- Delivers the unwelcome number to the person who needs to hear it, in an ordinary voice (Se).
What costs
- Holds a friend to the rule at exactly the strength a stranger would get, and cannot see why that ends it (Fi).
- Learns years later that one unreturned call in a bad month was filed as coldness (Fi).
- Reads a spec that defers its hardest choice to a later meeting as unfinished work, not as flexibility (Ne).
- Closes an open decision early, then builds honest reasons for it afterward, because the open state is unbearable (Ne).
What they want from other people
- Stays an hour longer at the table where somebody else is being funny, and supplies the deadpan line (Fe).
- Will hold a decision for six months if somebody they trust says the timing is not there yet (Ni).

In socionics, compatibility is a statement about coverage rather than about warmth.
The dual is ENFj. An ENFj supplies the mood an ISTj cannot start alone, and takes the worked-out order as something worth serving (ISTj and ENFj).
INFp is the activation partner. The first evening is lively and the third day is not, because neither one keeps the other's hours (ISTj and INFp).
ESTp is the mirror. Same beta material, opposite order: an ISTj settles the scheme and then holds it, while an ESTp pushes first and finds the rule after (ISTj and ESTp).
The conflictor is ENFp. An ENFp's whole method is opening possibilities nobody has ranked, which lands on the one place an ISTj has no defense (ISTj and ENFp).
The supervisor is ENTp. An ENTp leads with possibility and presses on it without meaning to, so an ISTj ends up defending ground nobody meant to attack (ISTj and ENTp).
§5 At work
Hand an ISTj the thing that has to hold: the audit, the schedule, the safety rule, the onboarding a new hire follows. They enforce it evenly, and hold themselves to it first, which is why it survives a challenge from someone senior. Keep the work that is mostly other people's feelings off their desk — the morale round, the peace talks between two teams. Give them a decided question and a deadline, and the answer comes back fast, with the impossible item named first.

Who is the ISTj's dual?
ENFj. An ENFj fills a room with feeling and direction, which is the supply an ISTj cannot generate alone, and an ISTj holds the line and the schedule an ENFj burns through. Picture a production week: one keeps the cast believing, the other keeps the calendar honest. Duality is coverage, not romance (ISTj and ENFj).
