ILI ↔ SEI
ILI and SEI: super-ego
ILI and SEI each do easily what the other performs under pressure. Super-ego relations look complementary from across a room and feel like being graded up close, which is why SEI and ILI usually stay polite and stay apart. The compatibility improves with distance, which is rarely the direction people want.
Respect, at a distance. Your strengths land on the slots the other works hardest to perform, and theirs land on yours. Admiration from across the room that curdles up close.

§1 Super-ego relations — how the stacks collide
| element | in ILI | in SEI | what happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ni | base (1) | role (3) | ILI's native tongue is SEI's rehearsed second language |
| Te | creative (2) | vulnerable (4) | ILI's favorite tool presses SEI's bruise |
| Si | role (3) | base (1) | ILI performs what SEI simply is |
| Fe | vulnerable (4) | creative (2) | SEI's favorite tool presses ILI's bruise |
| Se | suggestive (5) | ignoring (7) | SEI has plenty and won't make a show of it — quiet supply |
| Fi | mobilizing (6) | demonstrative (8) | SEI tops it up without being asked |
| Ne | ignoring (7) | suggestive (5) | ILI could supply it, and declines to perform it |
| Ti | demonstrative (8) | mobilizing (6) | ILI demonstrates; SEI takes notes |
slots, in one line: base & creative = native strengths · role = performed on demand · vulnerable = the sore spot · suggestive & mobilizing = what's wanted from others · ignoring & demonstrative = strong but not valued.
§2 In practice
Where it clicks
- An ILI keeps house like someone working through a checklist, grimly and on role Si. Visiting an SEI's home, where comfort just happens with no visible administration, they register something like professional awe.
- The SEI tries their hand at foresight on a small scale — that's role Ni: will the bus be late, will winter be hard. The ILI's actual long view, delivered flat, sounds to the SEI like a weather service worth trusting.
- The last thing an SEI wants to do is research a purchase. So an ILI relative who's already compared the failure rates of every washing machine on the market gets consulted gladly. The findings just can't arrive with a lecture attached.
- Hosting together takes no negotiation: the SEI runs the kitchen and the room's temperature, and the ILI gets stationed wherever a skeptical uncle needs out-arguing. Guests leave fed and corrected.
- A silent car ride worries neither of them. The SEI reads it as calm, and the ILI treats it as normal operating conditions. A two-hour drive goes by with nobody manufacturing conversation.
Where it grinds
- The ILI helps by auditing: this errand wastes forty minutes, that subscription is dead weight. Every finding is correct. The SEI's vulnerable Te receives the whole thing as an itemized list of personal failings.
- The SEI warms a room on purpose, pulling everyone into the mood through creative Fe. Enthusiasm on cue is the ILI's sore spot, so the invitation feels like a hand dragging them onstage.
- Once they share a roof, the SEI's standard of comfort becomes ambient law: the good blanket, the proper meal, the window open just so. Day after day, without a word said, the ILI's utilitarian housekeeping starts to look like a deficiency.
- Narrating decline is just how the ILI talks: the neighborhood's peaked, the firm has five years left. The SEI manages the future in small, careful doses, and the forecasts get heavier with every month of living together.
- Their evenings out fail symmetrically. The SEI wants the table laughing by dessert. The ILI files the laughter under overhead. Each rides home politely convinced the other wasted the night.
