ISFJ in socionics: SEI, ESI or EII?
Who are you easy with?
You're an ISFJ. MBTI told you who you are. It never told you who you fit with. In socionics those four letters do not resolve to one type: ISFJs land on SEI or ESI about equally often, and a smaller group on EII.
§1 Where ISFJs usually land
ISFJs split between SEI, the caretaker of comfort and atmosphere, and ESI, the loyal guardian of people and boundaries. Some land on EII.
§2 How to tell them apart
When someone asks you to justify a choice with numbers, does the request itself wear you out?
Yes points to SEI. The arrangement works and you can feel that it works; being asked to price it out reads as a demand in a language you do not speak. The pressure makes you dig in, not speed up. No points to ESI or EII, who both want a competent person on the practical side. Told plainly which option to buy, either one is relieved, and an EII will still be naming the person who said it a year later.
Does open-ended what-if talk relax you, or put you on edge?
Relaxes you: that is SEI or EII. An SEI keeps the friend who names an option they had not seen. An EII generates those options for other people, and is worst at seeing their own. Puts you on edge, and you want the realistic path named and the rest set aside: that is ESI. Open speculation is their sore spot, and it is the sharpest line between the two front-runners.
Somebody raises their voice and wants an answer on the spot. What happens in you next?
Give way, and then carry the encounter around for days: that is EII, whose weak spot is exactly this kind of pressure. Get steadier as it escalates, and hold a line you would never hold for yourself: that is ESI. An SEI sits in between. They can push back and mostly decline to, which from outside looks like an inability rather than a choice.
§3 Why the letters don't just convert
The mechanical rule you'll see elsewhere — keep the letters, flip j/p for introverts — maps ISFJ to SEI (socionics ISFp). It assumes the two systems measure the same four dichotomies the same way. They don't quite: socionics builds its types from eight function positions, MBTI from four letter preferences, and the correspondence between them is genuinely contested — which is why every ≈MBTI equivalence on this site carries an asterisk (method §1).
The conversion test treats your MBTI as evidence rather than an answer: ISFJ opens the candidate set above, and about twenty targeted questions decide between the candidates.
Your four letters don't translate one-to-one — introverts in particular often land somewhere unexpected, and the two scoring schools don't always agree. That's why we test instead of assuming. The question people ask most is why is my socionics type different from my MBTI type, and the answer is that the two systems are counting different things.
§4 Your dual, under each candidate
Socionics answers compatibility with one named relation per pair, and it calls the easiest of the sixteen duality — the closest thing socionics has to a soulmate. Which dual is yours depends on which candidate you are, so there are three answers here.
If you are SEI, your dual is ILE. They keep producing options you would not have found alone; you make the kind of comfort they never manage for themselves. SEI and ILE.
If you are ESI, your dual is LIE. They work out which course actually pays and where it lands in five years; you keep the bonds straight and say the hard sentence when it needs saying. ESI and LIE.
If you are EII, your dual is LSE. They run the practical side and keep the daily conditions decent, which are the two things you absorb badly and never arrange for yourself. EII and LSE.

What is the ISFJ socionics type?
There is not one. ISFJ is four MBTI letters; socionics builds its sixteen types out of eight function positions, and the letters open a shortlist rather than settling anything. ISFJ opens on SEI and ESI at equal weight, with EII at half that. Twenty questions then decide between the three.
Is ISFJ SEI or ESI in socionics?
Both start level, so nothing about the letters decides it. The usable tell is what you do with an unasked-for suggestion. An SEI wants the option they had not seen and will act on it; an ESI hears speculation about what could be and finds it unserious. Comfort and mood on one side, bonds and boundaries on the other: the same split read from the other end.
Why is my socionics type different from my MBTI type?
The letters name preferences. Socionics names positions. Take the S in ISFJ: for SEI it leads, the first slot and the strongest thing they do. For ESI it is the tool they reach for on someone else's behalf. For EII, being pushed at directly is where they give way. One letter, three different jobs. That is why the conversion is run as a test and not as a table lookup.
Who is the ISFJ's dual in socionics?
It depends which candidate you are. SEI's dual is ILE, ESI's dual is LIE, and EII's dual is LSE — three different people, which is why the shortlist has to be narrowed. Duality runs off the two seats each of you leads with. Your strongest, most valued work lands where the other has the least, and theirs lands where you have the least.
