INFJ in socionics: IEI, EII or EIE?
Who are you easy with?
You're an INFJ. MBTI told you who you are. It never told you who you fit with. In socionics the four letters open a candidate set rather than settle one. An INFJ usually reads as IEI or EII, with EIE a lighter third, and those three are easy with quite different people.
§1 Where INFJs usually land
INFJs split between IEI, imaginative and drifting through time, and EII, the quietly principled counselor. Some land on EIE when expressive mentorship dominates.
§2 How to tell them apart
When a decisive person pushes you into acting now, is that a relief or a wall?
Relief points to IEI, and to EIE behind it. Neither supplies much force alone, and both want it supplied by somebody else: the person who names the hour and comes to collect you. A wall points to EII. Direct pressure is an EII's sore spot — they give way in the room, say nothing at the time, and are still replaying it three days later. The question is not how forceful you are. It is what force from outside feels like.
In a room where you know one person, are you talking with three strangers before the first half hour is out?
If that happens without you planning it, look at EIE, the only extravert in the set. An EIE sets the temperature of a room rather than reading it, and will hold a table of twelve for an hour. If one long conversation leaves you full and a string of short ones empties you, the answer is IEI or EII. An IEI waits before touching the mood. An EII reads it and declines to work it. Both do their real talking one person at a time.
When you are stuck, who helps more: the one with the method, or the one who tells you how it ends?
The method points to EII. An EII takes practical instruction as relief rather than as an insult, and would rather be handed a working procedure than be consoled about the mess. The forecast points to IEI, or to EIE. Both produce that read on their own. What they want supplied is the push to act on it, and a framework solid enough to hang it from. An EII usually sees the ending coming too, and takes no comfort in hearing it said. Notice which help you remember years later.
§3 Why the letters don't just convert
The mechanical rule you'll see elsewhere — keep the letters, flip j/p for introverts — maps INFJ to IEI (socionics INFp). It assumes the two systems measure the same four dichotomies the same way. They don't quite: socionics builds its types from eight function positions, MBTI from four letter preferences, and the correspondence between them is genuinely contested — which is why every ≈MBTI equivalence on this site carries an asterisk (method §1).
The conversion test treats your MBTI as evidence rather than an answer: INFJ opens the candidate set above, and about twenty targeted questions decide between the candidates.
Your four letters don't translate one-to-one — introverts in particular often land somewhere unexpected, and the two scoring schools don't always agree. That's why we test instead of assuming. The question people ask most is why is my socionics type different from my MBTI type, and the answer is that the two systems are counting different things.
§4 Your dual, under each candidate
Socionics puts compatibility inside the type itself: every type has exactly one dual, the closest thing socionics has to a soulmate. Which one is yours depends on which of the three candidates you turn out to be.
An IEI's dual is SLE, who puts a date on the vision and makes the date hold — IEI and SLE.
An EII's dual is LSE, who runs the practical machinery an EII would otherwise run alone — EII and LSE.
An EIE's dual is LSI, who owns the rulebook and enforces it in person — EIE and LSI.
§5 Questions people ask
What is the INFJ socionics type?
INFJ does not name one socionics type. It names a candidate set of three: IEI and EII carry equal weight to begin with, and EIE half of that. The four letters set that starting position; they do not settle it. The test does, from your answers on pressure, on crowds, and on what you want other people to supply.
Is INFJ IEI or EII in socionics?
IEI and EII both stay live, and for an INFJ they start level. The clearest single tell is pressure. An IEI takes a decisive person pushing them along as relief, and would rather be carried than consulted. An EII goes quiet under exactly that push, agrees on the spot, and reruns the conversation privately afterward. Settle pressure and the rest of the INFJ reading usually follows.
Why is my socionics type different from my MBTI type?
A socionics type is eight functions in fixed seats, each seat saying how strong that function is and whether you want it from others. MBTI sorts four preferences and stops. Nothing in the letters says which of your functions is the weak one, so INFJ can sit over IEI, EII or EIE without contradiction. That is why the equivalences here carry ≈ and an asterisk.
Who is the INFJ's dual in socionics?
An INFJ's dual in socionics depends on which of the three candidates you are, and the three answers are not close. An IEI's dual is SLE. An EII's dual is LSE. An EIE's dual is LSI. Duality is the pairing where each person's weak but wanted functions are the other's strong ones, so the help arrives without being asked for and nobody has to explain the request. It is the relation the system is built around.
