LII ↔ ESI

LII and ESI: super-ego

LII and ESI each do easily what the other performs under pressure. Super-ego relations look complementary from across a room and feel like being graded up close, which is why ESI and LII usually stay polite and stay apart. The compatibility improves with distance, which is rarely the direction people want.

Respect, at a distance. Your strengths land on the slots the other works hardest to perform, and theirs land on yours. Admiration from across the room that curdles up close.

§1 Super-ego relations — how the stacks collide

elementin LIIin ESIwhat happens
Tibase (1)role (3)LII's native tongue is ESI's rehearsed second language
Necreative (2)vulnerable (4)LII's favorite tool presses ESI's bruise
Firole (3)base (1)LII performs what ESI simply is
Sevulnerable (4)creative (2)ESI's favorite tool presses LII's bruise
Fesuggestive (5)ignoring (7)ESI has plenty and won't make a show of it — quiet supply
Simobilizing (6)demonstrative (8)ESI tops it up without being asked
Teignoring (7)suggestive (5)LII could supply it, and declines to perform it
Nidemonstrative (8)mobilizing (6)LII demonstrates; ESI takes notes

slots, in one line: base & creative = native strengths · role = performed on demand · vulnerable = the sore spot · suggestive & mobilizing = what's wanted from others · ignoring & demonstrative = strong but not valued.

§2 In practice

Where it clicks

  1. The ESI follows rules conscientiously and finds them tiring — that's role Ti. So an LII who can produce, on request, the two-sentence reason any rule exists strikes the ESI as a small ongoing magic trick.
  2. The LII manages loyalty through etiquette — role Fi — and they know it. The ESI's unfaked verdicts about who's actually decent look, from there, like an instrument the LII doesn't own and couldn't counterfeit.
  3. On a committee they cover each other cleanly: the LII drafts the bylaws, the ESI enforces them against the one member everyone else is too polite to confront. Neither envies the other's job.
  4. Both keep small circles and honor their appointments. A dinner planned three weeks out happens on the date, at the hour, with none of the reconfirming texts either would find demeaning.
  5. When a landlord stonewalls the LII, an ESI friend makes one phone call in a tone the LII has never produced in their life. Received at a distance, the rescue is pure relief.

Where it grinds

  1. The same firmness turned inward makes different weather. When the ESI says 'decide now, I need an answer', it lands on the LII's vulnerable Se like a hand on the collar. The LII goes quiet and stays shaken well past bedtime.
  2. The LII improves ideas by branching them: we could also, or instead, or what if. The ESI hears the branching as evasion, because to vulnerable Ne a man with six options has made zero promises.
  3. Once they live together, the LII corrects definitions at the dinner table — 'that's not irony, strictly speaking'. To the ESI, it starts to feel like being graded against a scheme nobody agreed to.
  4. The ESI keeps an exact ledger of the relationship: who called, who forgot, what the silence meant. The LII performs politeness on schedule and keeps failing audits they didn't know were running.
  5. Debate is recreation for the LII and an alarm bell for the ESI. Every time the LII argues the other side for exercise, the ESI concludes — permanently — that a real position just slipped out.
